Pre-trip Inspection Checklist for Class 5/7 Driver’s Test – Essential Steps for Success
Preparing for your Class 5/7 road test? One crucial component is the pre-trip inspection of your vehicle. This inspection ensures that your car is roadworthy and that you demonstrate your knowledge of vehicle safety systems. Here’s a detailed checklist to help you pass this essential part of your driving test with ease.
1. Hand Signals for Driving Test
During your Class 5/7 pre-trip inspection, you’ll need to demonstrate your ability to use hand signals. These signals are vital for communicating with other drivers when your turn signals may not be visible or working.
- Left Hand Signal: Extend your left arm out of the window with your palm facing down.
- Right Hand Signal: Extend your left arm out of the window, bending your arm at a 90° angle with your palm facing up.
- Slow Down/Stop Signal: Extend your left arm out of the window and bend your arm at a 90° angle with the palm facing down.
2. Activate Your Turn Signals
The examiner will ask you to activate both your left and right turn signals to check their functionality. Be prepared for them to inspect the lights from both the front and back of your vehicle. Ensure that your signals are bright and visible and that they cancel properly after turning.
3. Step on the Brake Pedal
The examiner will ask you to step on the brake pedal to check your brake lights. Ensure that your brake lights are fully functional, as they are an essential safety feature and a requirement for your road test.
4. Test Your Headlights
Your headlights are crucial for driving at night and in poor visibility conditions. Turn on your headlights and switch between high beams and low beams to demonstrate their functionality. This test ensures your headlights are working properly, and you’re able to manage them when needed.
5. Test Your Windshield Wipers
Your windshield wipers need to be functioning properly to keep your windshield clear during rain or snow. The examiner will ask you to operate them, so be sure to test the wipers to ensure they’re in good condition and clean the windshield effectively.
6. Defrost System Check
The defrost system is essential for clearing fog or ice from your windshield. During the pre-trip inspection, you’ll need to demonstrate that the vehicle’s hot air defrost system works properly to direct warm air toward the windshield. This ensures that your view isn’t obstructed by condensation or frost.
Important Tips for Pre-trip Inspection:
- Ensure all vehicle lights are working properly (headlights, brake lights, turn signals, etc.).
- There should be no warning or fault lights showing on the dashboard when you start your vehicle.
- If any of your vehicle’s lights or systems are malfunctioning, get them fixed before your road test to avoid a failed inspection.
- By thoroughly preparing for the Class 5/7 pre-trip inspection, you’ll show the examiner that you understand your vehicle’s systems and can safely operate them on the road. Ensuring your lights, signals, wipers, and defrost are in good working order will make a big difference.
